about

Compact disc available at Drumsandwiresrecordings dot com

Yellow Light is one of those albums that rewards patience. This low-key, rootsy collection from Seattle singer-songwriter Jon Hyde resonates with a subtle, alt-country soulfulness that recalls the likes of Paul Burch, the Jayhawks, Wilco, and Neil Young in one of his pastoral moods. In Hyde's case, as with the aforementioned artists, low-key shouldn't be mistaken with laidback. Indeed, there are thistles mixed into Hyde's bouquet of flowering melodies. "The world that's opening up is really like a broken window," he declares in "Let It Come," the album's penultimate song and a suitable summary of the flashes of bliss and dejection that have preceded it. With nothing left to add, Hyde and company sign off with an incongruously jaunty but oddly apt instrumental. And then you might find yourself simply returning to the first track. It's that kind of album. --Steven Stolder, Amazon

Jon Hyde does plenty of good work with the dobro, pedal steel, accordion and banjo on his new album, Yellow Light. But his work with Tucker Martine on the production knobs is what sets this artful roots rock record apart from others in it's genre. --Richard Martin, Seattle Weekly
